HS3 Z-wave was great for years, now SUPER flakey

Hi, I've been a very satisfied HS3 user for quite some time and have (had) a super high WAF! But now even my approval factor is quite low...

Z-wave events now take anywhere from 5-30 seconds to switch on & off lights. And now the lights often quick cycle on and off a couple to a few times in quick succession, often not ended up where it needs to be.

I did notice first thing in the morning (or after a long period of inactivity) responses are usually instant (like they used to be). I haven't had a lot of luck using the Z-Seer tool to find anything interesting, and I've tried optimizing some nodes I feel are important.

I've tried a new PC with a fresh install of Win 7 Pro and HS3, with a restore of the previous system and I still see the delays. I've rebooted many times and even added a restart plugin to restart HS3 each night to no avail. I also tried running the beta z-wave plugin v. 3.0.1.208 although it didn't seem to make any difference. Went back to my Intel NUC win 10 version since it didn't help.

I swapped the SmartStick+ with another spare new one, restored my setup on it and it still does the same thing. I played with the COM port settings regarding UARTs. I tried different USB ports, as well as removed the extension cable I was using to get the SmartStick+ up high in the house.

Nothing seems to help. Here are some facts that might jump out at someone more knowledgeable here:

1. I have a bunch (5-10) devices that are offline. Nothing I would call critical, just some plug-in appliance modules that are not in use. Should I delete them completely?

2. I have moved most of my lighting to Philips Hue, and love it. They're reliable, neat, and the JowiHue plugin lets me do some cool stuff. Plus they're on a separate system so they're reliable. Mentioning this because the HS3+JowiHue+Philips Hub all work great without any delays or weirdness.

3. Maybe there's a different Z-wave module (other than SmartStick+) that I should try out?

4. I was tempted to buy the HomeSeer remote z-wave Rpi thing but wasn't sure if that would help at all.

Short of starting over (delete everything, reset stuff, add back one at a time) which sounds like a nightmare (events, some modules are inside wall boxes, etc. I'd really like to diagnose this and figure it out.

One thing, I use MiniMotes everywhere and they often "blink funny" when the event isn't going to process immediately. On the HS3 log it shows the proper "Device: Family Room FR minimote-a Set to 60" type of log immediately when I press the button, but the action it's supposed to do doesn't happen. This shows up like it's "trying" to run the event:

Event Trigger "Family Room Toggle bookshelves mm 3"

But the toggled light doesn't turn on/off for a significant delay.

To me it really looks like some kind of "throttled buffer" that's fully congested and so full it might drop data to process. On the z-wave plugin page it shows this information currently for the SmartStick:

Counters Since Startup
Request Frames 14347
Response Frames 10901
App Frames Waiting 33

Is that any kind of clue?

Any thoughts on how to troubleshoot this would be greatly appreciated!

Zigbee (like the Philips) is getting more and more appealing to me although do they make appliance and dimmer plug in modules?

Thanks!

Tabletop Controller not showing up as a device

I have a pair of older Simply Automated UCT-08 devices (Tabletop Controller 8-Button) and when I was using HS2 these showed up as devices that I could control. At the time, I wasn't using your UPB plugin, but HS's--so that's the next thing that different.

Anyway, is there any chance that I can tweak something with your plug-in or upe file to get these to show up as devices? The downside to these is that they are only an output-only controller normally, except that they have status lights that can be controlled. Unfortunately its easy to get the status lights out of sync with the controller, so I was using HS to keep them in sync (happens, for example, when All Lights Off is activated).

I don't mind if I need to manually tweak something, like in the upe file, nor do I mind if they show up with the wrong device type, etc.

Below is what one looks like in the upe file.

If there's anything I can do to get these to show up in HS3, that would be great.

Notice: New Version coming with major changes. A few questions first.

Due to some issues some users have had with their settings missing, I have changed how the plugin stores the settings. I was using the PED (Plugin Extra Data) in the devices to store the settings. This seemed to work well and was fast (and is still how MeiKu is done).

I'm not sure if it's the sheer number of settings that are stored in MeiHarmonyHub or something else, but to eliminate that issue, I am moving to storing the settings in JSON files. INI would have been easier since HS has some nice INI functions, but ultimately, JSON afforded me the flexibility to store all the data I need to.

The Data will be stored in 2 files:

HSPI_MeiHarmonyHubs_Settings.json - This holds the basic settings (from the Main and Logging tabs)

HSPI_MeiharmonyHubs_KnownHubs.json - This holds all the settings about the actual known hubs (enabled or not), their devices and the commands.

The second file can grow quite a lot, so this may need to be revisitted later, but with my 4 hubs it loads in less than 100ms (only done on plugin start). The saves (done whenever a setting is changed) is between 10-30ms.

I have written a method that if your install is a certain version at plugin startup, it will automatically move all your settings from the PED to the JSON files. Before I release it, I wanted to ask some questions:
  • Would it be worth while to "backup" the previous settings file on plugin start? I think this is currently done by HS behind the scenes.
  • If I do the backups, would 1 suffice, or would it be better to have the option to set a number of backups (for instance keep 3 backups from the last 3 plugin starts). Note that if I did this, it would delay the release as i have to figure out the logic for handling this.
  • Because this is a pretty major change, I may want to do a limited release, or at the very least strongly urge users to backup before installing. I've tested by installing previous versions and updating to this version and so far it has always worked, but better safe than sorry.

Some other fixes in this version:
  • Unchecking and checking "Use Activities?" or "Use Sleep?" for a hub could cause it to create a new device instead of using an existing one.
  • Fixed some oddities pointed out by Mark on the settings pages regarding changing between hubs/devices.

Some other features that have been planned for, but not yet fully implemented:
  • I have accounted for name mapping for commands so that you can name the commands in the HomeSeer status graphics.
  • I have accounted for "disabling" a command so it doesn't show up in the list

Neither of the above are fully implemented, but I wanted to point them out as the settings files may have references to them, but changing those values in the files won't have any effect.

NodeMCU connected Neopixel strips

Just thought I'd share some work I put in this weekend to control Neopixel RGBW LED strips via the Arduino plug-in.

First some background:
A few months back, I installed around 10 meters of addressable Neopixel strips - SK6812s specifically - above and below my kitchen cabinets, wired to a NodeMCU for control. I started out using ESPEasy firmware to control it by http commands. That worked well enough, and I planned to create some virtual devices and events to control them with Homeseer. Unfortunately, during testing I found the firmware was not reliable enough for everyday use. I'm still not sure what was causing it, but after a variable amount of time, the NodeMCU would become unreachable and require a press of the reset button. So I gave up on ESPEasy.

I looked at a few other firmwares, and was considering moving to RPI for control when I remembered I had purchased a license for the Arduino plug-in but hadn't made use of it yet. Sadly, since most users probably don't bother with addressable LEDs for cabinet lighting, I didn't find any other posts about having done what I needed. So I played around for a bit with the NodeMCU API and I now have a working sketch that let's me control my pixels directly from Homeseer. As of now I have Brightness, R, G, B, and W devices with sliders to adjust individual color values and another device with preset color values. It works great, and I've yet to have any connectivity issues. I also love that OTA updating is built into the API sketch, as I haven't needed to plug and unplug the NodeMCU dozens of times as I did with some other solutions I toyed with.

Here's a screenshot of the controls:

Attachment 68041

And one of the Plug-in config page:

Attachment 68042

Here are the edits I made to the API sketch:

Attachment 68043

When I have the time, I plan to add some inputs to control the cabinet tops and bottoms independently so I can, for example, set top and bottom brightness to different levels or turn off the bottoms and dim the tops at night. Once that's done, I want to look at creating patterns without the delay() function, and possibly set up buttons in Homeseer to make holiday light themes simple.

Overall I'm very pleased with how easily I was able to get something up and running with this plugin, and I hope someone else finds this post useful.

Group name keeps changing

The Insteon Plugin Groups are working great, but the location portion of the "Group Name" changes erratically. Can you look into the issues below?

-When creating a group I wish to leave "Group Location" empty, but the plugin keeps generating a value for location. For Alexa I do not want the group to be called "[Location] Shutdown house" (See image). The work around is to manually set "Room" to blank in the HS3 main view. Note the room keeps re-appearing when I mess with the groups (i.e. Add/Edit group).

-When I try giving a custom "Group Location" (i.e. House) it eventually ends up returning to the name "Group 1 Location" (See image).

Adding zones while panel monitoring results in an error in log

$

Mark,

FYI -- I was adding the zones to HS3 (new install on Linux) for my Vista 128BP and I saw several of these log entries indicating that a collection was modified (I'm guessing in a foreach loop since I used to see something similar some HS code I wrote a few years back).

It doesn't seem to have caused any harm but I thought I'd send it to you just in case -- I was just using the 'Add Zone' option on the plugin configuration page -- when each zone entry was complete, it would either display something like zone successfully added or it would take me back to the first configuration page where you choose the panel type etc. I'm guessing this is a locking issue but it seems to be harmless.

Thanks!

Mitch

Orphaned Events - list them?

When plug-ins get updated there are often devices created by that plug-in that get duplicated and/or deleted and recreated with different ID's. This means that any events on those devices wind up broken. I've been through this several times already and I've only had HS for a few months. Is there a quick way (or slow way) to list any events that depend on, or control devices that no longer exist?

I was looking to buy the MCO Home MH7-WH thermostat.
Does anyone have this thermostat or any otherMH7 series thermostat?

I was wondering if it works with HomeSeer and what kind of devices are created. (setpoint, current temp, on/off, operation mode).
Vesternet says it's compatible but I only found 1 thread that it didn't work .

Time Conditions Not Working?

I have an event like this (I'll get setup for screenshots soon... :) )

Event: Turn on Kitchen Lights

if device changes kitchen motion sensor
and if light is not on
and if time is ... before 1:00AM
then turn on light

The problem is with the "AND IF time is ... before 1:00AM". If I remove that element then the event fires. But with that condition nothing. I know it's before 1AM as I'm typing this. Is thee something "special" about time with HS3 that I'm not aware of?

Hue lights changing to RGB in Imperihome

I have a couple of Philips Hue color bulbs that I have integrated with Conbee USB and Deconz gateway. The bulbs are showing up in both Homeseer and Imperihome. But to control the bulbs I have to configure them in the Imperihome plugin as HSV and this works for a while and then they are automatically changed back to RGB in the Imperihome plugin.

Anyone have any input on what to do to make them stay HSV configured or other suggestion on how to configure to control in an easy way from Imperihome?

Hey all,

I'm thinking of trying to do some plugins and some scripting. I have a background in Unix and Linux with shell, perl, python etc and I have done java and lua but never C# or VB or VB.script generally no Windows stuff :D

What should I focus on learning first? C# or VB? I started messing with C# yesterday, reminds me a lot of Java. But I see a lot of things being referenced as VB or VB.script and some in C#... what's the direction? And what's best for cross-platform? I've seen the posts that CS scripts have problems on linux so that's not good, but what about compiled code with Mono?

Just looking for tips/advice for someone starting REALLY fresh on HS3 development.

How to change from US to UK/EU date format in HS3 linux/Pi

By default HS3 displays dates in the US mm/dd/yy format. To change to the UK/EU format of dd/mm/yy make the following changes to your system.

1 - Log in to your system command line using SSH from another linux box or an SSH client for windows such as Putty.

2 - Ensure that the system locale is set to your region (in this example we will use en_GB for the UK).

a. Check the current locale typing:

localectl

This is what I see on my laptop.

ICS-HPN:~$ localectl

System Locale: LANG=en_US.UTF-8
VC Keymap: n/a
X11 Layout: us
X11 Model: pc105

b. If the current locale is not correct, check that the required locale is installed:

localectl list-locales
...
en_GB.UTF-8
...

c. Change the system locale to the desired region

sudo localectl set-locale LC_ALL=en_GB.UTF-8

d. Check the change has been implemented:

localectl

3 - That has changed the system locale to the correct region.

However, HomeSeer changes the locale of the homeseer user to en_US, on the fly, when HomeSeer starts so it is necessary to edit some HomeSeer configuration files to complete the changes.

By default linux comes with vi as its command line editor. Many find the interface difficult to use and prefer nano instead. To install nano, issue the following commands:

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install nano

a. Change the homeseer startup file:

sudo nano /usr/local/HomeSeer/autostart_hs

Change the line:
export LANG=en_US.UTF-8
to
export LANG=en_GB.UTF-8

b. Change the homeseer go file:

sudo nano /usr/local/HomeSeer/go

Change the line:
export LANG=en_US.UTF-8
to
export LANG=en_GB.UTF-8

c. If necessary add you actual location to the location.csv file. To add your location edit the file:

sudo nano /usr/local/HomeSeer/Config/location.csv

and add your actual location copying the format of already entered locations. NOTE: there is a long standing feature/bug that the longitude values in the file are reverse signed. ie West of Greenwich values are positive instead of the expected negative.

4 - Restart the system to implement the changes:

sudo reboot

Hampton Bay Wink-Enabled Zigbee Fan Module

Hey everyone!

So I really want to try and get this to work but might just be uncommon enough that I can't find any documentation to work. I've gotten the Osram Lightify Gateway, set it up, and I thought Zigbee would be as easy as Z-wave that I could pair any generic zigbee device to Lightify but can't seem to find a way.

Reason I ask is because I have these Wink fan controllers and am switching over to HS and want to continue using them. Is there any reason I can't do this or better question, does anyone have any idea how I can pair this with the Lightify app so I can get this into HomeSeer?

Thank you!

I just received the RaspBee premium, and have installed on an RPi with the Deconz Jessie image. I *believe* it’s working.

I’ve gone into JowiHue confit and have scanned fro bridge, but nothing is coming up. Do I need to do some config on DeCONZ hub first?

Would appreciate any help with next step..
